The 17th edition of OPTATEC, the international trade fair for optical technologies, components and systems, brought the global optics and photonics community together in Frankfurt from May 5 to 7, 2026. For Pureon, it was three intensive and rewarding days – marked by meaningful conversations, strong customer connections, and a clear signal that the industry’s appetite for precision surface finishing solutions is growing.
One of the highlights of this year’s OPTATEC for Pureon was the depth of engagement with OEM partners. These relationships are at the heart of how Pureon develops and refines its solutions. Working closely with leading original equipment manufacturers allows us to push the boundaries of what’s technically achievable – and Frankfurt provided an ideal environment to strengthen those partnerships, align on future developments, and explore new collaborative opportunities.
“The conversations at our booth confirmed what we see in our day-to-day work: OEMs are facing increasingly demanding surface quality requirements, driven by applications in AR/VR displays, high-resolution imaging, semiconductor optics, and defense”, says Peter Deisling, Technical Sales Manager at Pureon. “Pureon’s vertically integrated approach – from in-house R&D through to application testing – resonates strongly in this context.”
Three Products at the Center of Attention
Pureon’s booth featured three products that drew particularly strong interest from visitors across the three days:
“Together, these three products reflect Pureon’s commitment to addressing the full spectrum of precision polishing needs in modern optical manufacturing – from standard glass substrates to the most challenging crystalline and high-purity materials”, says Peter Deisling.
Part of a Growing Industry
Beyond the individual conversations at our booth, the fair as a whole sent a clear message: the optics and photonics industry is active, technically ambitious, and hungry for reliable partners. A continued market trend toward advanced materials such as Zerodur and calcium fluoride – both of which were strongly in demand at the show – further highlighted the growing requirements placed on precision polishing solutions.
Two sectors stood out as particularly strong drivers of this trend. The European AR/VR market is growing rapidly – projected to rise from USD 9.7 billion in 2025 to over USD 30 billion by 2032, more than tripling in size – and the optical components at the heart of these devices are becoming ever more demanding. Waveguides, near-eye displays, and freeform optical assemblies require surface quality that leaves little room for compromise: sub-angstrom roughness, minimal sub-surface damage, and exceptional consistency across production runs. These are precisely the conditions under which Pureon’s polishing slurries are designed to perform.
Defense optics is a further area of growing relevance. European defense budgets have risen sharply in recent years – EU member states’ combined defense expenditure reached €343 billion in 2024, up 19% year-on-year, with equipment procurement rising 39% to €88 billion.
With this investment comes increasing demand for high-performance optical systems: targeting and surveillance optics, electro-optical and infrared sensors, and laser-based platforms all depend on components finished to the tightest tolerances. There is also a growing emphasis on European supply chain sovereignty in this space: the push for domestically sourced, precision-engineered components is opening up new opportunities for suppliers who can meet the most demanding optical specifications.
For Pureon, being present at OPTATEC means being part of that evolution. Our customers operate at the leading edge of optical manufacturing – we make sure our solutions don’t just meet their requirements, but anticipate them.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who visited our booth, engaged in conversation, and shared their challenges and ambitions with us.
We leave Frankfurt with valuable insights, renewed relationships, and concrete next steps.
